D2L Brightspace review: what D2L stands for, add-ons, pricing and fit

D2L stands for Desire2Learn, the Canadian company that makes the Brightspace learning management system. Brightspace is best known in universities and K-12, and D2L also sells it to businesses, training organizations, associations and government.

Short answer

D2L Brightspace is a strong choice if you are a college, university or school system that wants a mature academic LMS with outcomes tracking, analytics and a long record on interoperability standards. It also fits large training organizations willing to buy add-ons. It is a heavier, quote-only platform for an association or a mid-size training team that mainly needs member education, CE credits and course sales; for those, compare an LMS with published pricing and AMS sync, such as MyPass LMS.

Reviewed October 2026 by the team at Kprise, makers of MyPass LMS. Facts come from D2L Brightspace's public pages, listed under Sources.

Who D2L Brightspace fits

A good fit if you

  • Run a college, university or school system and want an established academic LMS
  • Need outcomes and competency reporting across programs, not just course completions
  • Want strong interoperability with other education tools through LTI and other 1EdTech standards
  • Have an IT and instructional design team that can configure a large platform and its add-ons

Look elsewhere if you

  • Are an association that needs course access and CE credits driven by your AMS records
  • Want a published price or a self-hosted option before talking to sales
  • Need a simple LMS a small team can launch in days

What D2L Brightspace is

What does D2L stand for? D2L is short for Desire2Learn. John Baker founded the company in 1999 while studying systems design engineering at the University of Waterloo, and it is still headquartered in Kitchener, Ontario. In July 2014 the company shortened its name to D2L and renamed its learning platform Brightspace, which is why older documentation, and many students, still say "D2L" when they mean the LMS.

Brightspace is used most in higher education and K-12, but D2L also markets it to businesses (D2L for Business), training organizations, associations and government. The platform is sold as Brightspace Core plus add-ons: D2L Lumi for AI assistance, Creator+ for interactive course authoring, Performance+ for course and learner analytics, Achievement+ for outcomes-based reporting, D2L Link for integrations and Accessibility+. D2L bought Course Merchant, an e-commerce tool for selling courses, in 2023 and the interactive-content company H5P Group in 2024.

Who owns D2L? D2L has been a public company on the Toronto Stock Exchange (DTOL) since its November 2021 IPO, with John Baker as CEO. In April 2026 the investment firm 2717 Partners made a non-binding offer of C$10.50 a share to take the company private; check the current status if ownership matters to your procurement.

Key features

Brightspace Core

Courses, assessments, grading, learning paths and communication tools for instructors and learners, used across universities, schools and corporate programs.

D2L Lumi (AI)

AI assistance built into Brightspace to help instructors and admins create and manage learning faster, which D2L says keeps users "in full control" of the output.

Creator+ (authoring)

An add-on for building interactive course content inside Brightspace instead of a separate authoring tool.

Performance+ and Achievement+

Performance+ adds course and learner analytics; Achievement+ tracks learning outcomes and competencies on a dashboard for program-level reporting and accreditation.

Interoperability and D2L Link

D2L says Brightspace was the first commercial LMS certified for Learning Tools Interoperability (LTI) and holds 1EdTech certifications. D2L Link is the integration tooling for connecting other systems.

Course Merchant and H5P

Course Merchant (acquired 2023) adds a storefront for selling courses; H5P (acquired 2024) is a widely used tool for interactive content.

D2L Brightspace pricing

D2L does not publish Brightspace prices. Its pricing page says pricing is "customized to your needs" and asks you to talk to a pricing expert.

According to D2L, the quote depends on the number of users (full-time employees or student full-time equivalents), the features you need, your implementation timeline, additional services and support, and the integrations required. You buy Brightspace Core and add the add-ons you want, such as Lumi, Creator+ or Performance+, plus optional services such as onboarding and customer success packages.

Budget for implementation and add-ons as well as the core license. Because pricing scales with user counts, compare total cost over three years, not the first-year quote.

Pros and cons

Pros

  • Mature, widely used LMS in higher education and K-12
  • Outcomes and competency reporting through Achievement+
  • Strong interoperability record, including early LTI certification
  • Modular add-ons, so you pay for analytics, authoring or AI only if you need them
  • Course selling available through Course Merchant

Cons

  • No published pricing; every budget starts with a sales conversation
  • Pricing tied to user counts, so cost grows with your audience
  • Many capabilities are paid add-ons on top of Brightspace Core
  • Built around academic institutions, which can feel heavy for small training teams
  • No self-hosted option advertised

D2L Brightspace vs MyPass LMS

D2L Brightspace alternatives

D2L Brightspace questions, answered

What does D2L stand for?

D2L stands for Desire2Learn. John Baker founded the company under that name in 1999 while he was an engineering student at the University of Waterloo. In July 2014 it shortened its name to D2L and renamed its learning platform Brightspace, which is why many people still call the LMS "D2L".

Is D2L the same as Brightspace?

Not quite. D2L is the company and Brightspace is its learning management system. Because the platform was called Desire2Learn, or D2L, before it was renamed in 2014, many schools and students still use "D2L" as the name of the LMS itself. Your school's "D2L" login is almost always Brightspace.

How much does D2L Brightspace cost?

D2L does not publish prices. Brightspace is quoted based on the number of users, the features and add-ons you need, your implementation timeline, support services and integrations. You buy Brightspace Core and can add products such as Lumi, Creator+ or Performance+, so compare total cost over several years, including implementation.

Who owns D2L?

D2L Inc. has been publicly traded on the Toronto Stock Exchange under the symbol DTOL since its November 2021 IPO, and founder John Baker is CEO. In April 2026, investment firm 2717 Partners made a non-binding offer of C$10.50 a share to take D2L private; check the latest news for the current status.

Is D2L Brightspace only for universities?

No. Higher education and K-12 are its biggest markets, but D2L also sells Brightspace to businesses through D2L for Business, and to training organizations, associations and government. Associations should check how it connects to their AMS, since member-driven enrollment and CE credit tracking are not the focus of the core product.
